An article published in SMH claims that we should consider human engineering in a bid to decrease the amount of carbon dioxide we produce annually. The options surrounding human engineering include the use of drugs so that humans can consumer less red meat, hormone treatment therapy on foetuses still in the womb so they are born small in height, the lowering of birth rates so that each family is limited to two children and use of drugs to create empathy and altruism within humans so that they can “do the right thing.”

Is anyone else reminded of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World?!? If we go down the path of human engineering then what next? We will then enter into the relm of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eight-Four and have our own Big Brother that oversees everyone? These are all drastic measures to be taken in regards to a gas that is produced naturally. Furthermore is completely retracts any freedom that citizens in democratic countries have fought so hard for. The author of the article mentions that only those that are willing to undertake human engineering procedures will be subjected to them.

It would be interesting to find out who would be willing to undergo these procedures and if it will even have a substantial effect on the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere. And if it has no effect will the rest of society that had initially refused to undergo these procedures be forced into part taking in them in order to satisfy a wild goose-chase? It is concerning to think that some of these measures are being considered by influential people within society.
